What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods in Vedic astrology. It maps out your life based on the exact position of the Moon when you were born.
Astrologers use this system to predict timing. While your birth chart shows your life setup, the Dasha system tells you when specific events will actually happen. A planet only gives its full results when its specific time period arrives.
How the 120-Year Cycle Works
The system divides a 120-year lifespan into nine main periods (Mahadashas). Each period belongs to a specific planet and lasts for a set number of years:
- Ketu: 7 years
- Venus: 20 years
- Sun: 6 years
- Moon: 10 years
- Mars: 7 years
- Rahu: 18 years
- Jupiter: 16 years
- Saturn: 19 years
- Mercury: 17 years
You do not start at the beginning of this list. The Nakshatra (moon sign) you were born under determines which period you start with, and how many years you have left in it. From there, the cycle moves forward in this exact order.
Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha
The main 120-year periods are broad. To make accurate predictions, astrologers break them down into smaller chunks.
- Mahadasha (Major Period): The main planetary ruler. This sets the broad theme for years at a time.
- Antardasha (Sub-Period): A smaller period within the Mahadasha, ruled by a second planet. This lasts for months or a few years.
- Pratyantardasha (Sub-Sub-Period): An even smaller slice, ruled by a third planet. This lasts for days or weeks.
For example, you might be in a Jupiter Mahadasha (focusing on growth and money), but a Saturn Antardasha (requiring hard work and patience). The combination of these planets tells the full story of that specific time in your life.
