The Science Behind the Hindu Calendar
The traditional Hindu Calendar (Panchang) is a lunisolar system. It tracks both the Sun's transit through the zodiac (solar months) and the Moon's phases (lunar days, or Tithis).
This dual tracking ensures that agricultural cycles (solar) and spiritual/emotional rhythms (lunar) remain perfectly aligned. Our tool calculates the precise Tithi at sunrise every day to determine when major festivals and fasting days occur.
Major Vrat (Fasting) Days
Fasting on specific lunar phases has deep detoxifying effects on both the body and the mind. The most common days for Vrat are:
- Ekadashi: The 11th lunar day of both the waxing (Shukla) and waning (Krishna) phases. Fasting on Ekadashi resets the digestive system and clears mental fog.
- Purnima (Full Moon): A day of high energy and emotional peak. Fasting or meditating on Purnima brings deep spiritual calm.
- Amavasya (New Moon): A powerful day for honoring ancestors and inner reflection. The Moon's energy is completely withdrawn.
- Sankashti Chaturthi: Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, observed on the 4th day after the Full Moon to remove obstacles.
How Accurate Are These Dates?
Very accurate. Instead of using static tables, we use the Swiss Ephemeris (`swisseph`) to calculate the exact angle between the Sun and Moon for your specific time zone.
A Tithi changes when the Moon moves exactly 12 degrees away from the Sun. By checking the Tithi that is active at the exact moment of sunrise, we programmatically determine the correct festival day for your location.
