...What is a Panchang?
A Panchang is a traditional Hindu calendar. It tracks the movement of the Sun and the Moon to help you find the best time for daily activities.
The word "Panchang" means "five limbs" in Sanskrit. These five limbs are Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Var. By calculating these five elements, we can figure out the exact energy of any given day. Is today good for starting a business, or better for resting? The Panchang tells you.
The Five Limbs of Panchang Explained
1. Tithi (The Lunar Day)
A Tithi is a lunar day. It depends on the exact angle between the Sun and the Moon. A new Tithi begins every time the Moon moves 12 degrees away from the Sun.
Because the Moon's speed changes, a Tithi does not last exactly 24 hours. It can start and end at any time of day. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month—15 in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) when the Moon grows, and 15 in the dark half (Krishna Paksha) when it shrinks. Certain Tithis, like Ekadashi or Purnima (Full Moon), are highly auspicious for prayers and fasting.
2. Nakshatra (The Lunar Mansion)
The Nakshatra shows exactly where the Moon is in the sky. Ancient astronomers divided the sky into 27 sections. As the Moon orbits the Earth, it spends about one day in each of these sections.
Your birth Nakshatra determines your core personality and how you react to stress. But the daily Nakshatra determines the mood of the day. For example, the Ashwini Nakshatra brings fast, healing energy, while the Bharani Nakshatra brings heavy, transformative energy. You check the daily Nakshatra to see what kind of work will succeed that day.
3. Yoga (The Sun-Moon Combination)
Yoga literally means "union." We calculate it by adding the longitude of the Sun to the longitude of the Moon. There are 27 Yogas in total. Some bring success and joy, while others bring obstacles and delays. Knowing the daily Yoga helps you avoid starting big projects on days with blocking energy.
4. Karana (The Half-Tithi)
A Karana is exactly half of a Tithi. Because there are 30 Tithis in a month, there are 60 Karanas. Most Karanas are good for specific tasks. For example, the Bava Karana is great for leaving the house to do something important. The Vishti Karana, also known as Bhadra, is generally avoided for any good work.
5. Var (The Weekday)
This is simply the day of the week, from Sunday to Saturday. In Vedic astrology, each day is ruled by a specific planet. Tuesday is ruled by Mars, making it a day for physical effort and courage. Friday is ruled by Venus, making it perfect for art, romance, and buying luxury items.
Understanding Daily Timings
Along with the five limbs, the Panchang tells you the specific time windows during the day that are lucky or unlucky. The two most important windows are Rahu Kaal and Abhijit Muhurat.
What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is an inauspicious 90-minute window that happens every day. It is ruled by Rahu, the shadow planet of confusion and illusion. You should never start anything important during Rahu Kaal. Do not sign contracts, do not buy a house, and do not start a new job. Just do your normal routine work until the window passes.
What is Abhijit Muhurat?
Abhijit Muhurat is the most powerful and lucky 48-minute window of the day. It usually peaks exactly at local noon. It is so strong that it cancels out many negative astrological effects. If you need to do something important but cannot find a completely clear day, doing it during Abhijit Muhurat is your safest bet.
Why Your Location Matters
A Panchang is completely tied to the local sunrise and sunset. If you live in New York, the Sun rises at a different time than in Mumbai. Because planetary hours and windows like Rahu Kaal are calculated starting from the local sunrise, the exact timings change drastically depending on where you stand.
This is why generic calendars fail. Our tool uses Swiss Ephemeris mathematics to calculate the exact planetary angles for the city you enter, giving you the correct timing down to the exact minute.
Check Your Personal Timings
The Panchang shows the general energy of the day for everyone. To see how this energy specifically affects you, you need to combine it with your birth chart.
