Planetary Hour Calculator

Find the ruling planet for any hour of the day or night to perfectly time your activities.

What is the Hora Calculator?

A Hora is a planetary hour. While a standard hour always lasts 60 minutes, a planetary hour changes length every single day based on the exact time of sunrise and sunset. In Vedic astrology, each Hora is ruled by one of the seven physical planets. The planet ruling the current hour directly influences the success or failure of whatever action you take during that time.

Our Hora Calculator uses precise high-precision astronomical data to determine your exact local sunrise and sunset times. We then divide the daytime and nighttime into 12 equal segments to give you the mathematically accurate planetary hour for your specific location, completely eliminating the errors found in generic printed charts.

The Sequence of Planetary Hours

The first Hora of the day begins at sunrise. It is always ruled by the planet that rules the day of the week (e.g., the Sun rules Sunday). From there, the ruling planets follow a strict descending order based on their speed and distance from Earth: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon.

Jupiter (Guru) Hora

The most auspicious hour of the day. It is excellent for starting a new business, getting married, signing major contracts, or seeking advice from an expert. Actions started in Jupiter's hour tend to expand and bring long-term wealth.

Venus (Shukra) Hora

The best hour for romance, art, and luxury. It is ideal for going on a date, buying a new car, purchasing jewelry, or launching a creative project. It supports anything related to beauty and comfort.

Mercury (Budha) Hora

The hour of communication and intellect. Use this time to send important emails, study for an exam, trade stocks, or write a speech. It favors speed and sharp thinking.

Mars (Mangal) Hora

An intense, aggressive hour. It is great for competitive sports, physical workouts, or dealing with construction and property. Do not use this hour for peace talks, marriage, or starting arguments, as tempers will flare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a Hora not exactly 60 minutes long?

A Hora is calculated by taking the total daylight time (from sunrise to sunset) and dividing it by 12. In the summer, daylight lasts longer, so a daytime Hora might be 75 minutes. In the winter, daylight is shorter, making the Hora less than 60 minutes.

Can I use the Hora instead of checking a full Muhurat?

Yes. If you need to make a quick decision and do not have time to calculate a full Muhurat (which involves checking the Tithi, Nakshatra, and Yoga), checking the current Hora is the fastest and most reliable alternative.

Is the Saturn Hora always bad?

No. While Saturn is a strict planet that causes delays, its Hora is excellent for laying the foundation of a building, dealing with labor, or starting long, tedious tasks that require immense patience and discipline.

Do Rahu and Ketu have their own Horas?

No. Only the seven physical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) rule the Horas. The shadow planets Rahu and Ketu are excluded from this system.
