What is Mangal Dosha (Manglik)?

Mangal Dosha occurs when the planet Mars (Mangal) sits in specific houses in your birth chart (Kundli). In astrology, Mars represents fire, aggression, high energy, and conflict. When Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant, the chart is considered Manglik.

This planetary alignment directly affects marriage and long-term partnerships. Because Mars brings a fiery and dominant energy, a person with Mangal Dosha tends to have strong opinions, high expectations, and a quick temper. If their partner does not have matching planetary energy, this can lead to frequent arguments, tension, and in some cases, separation.

How Does Mangal Dosha Affect Marriage?

The primary reason astrologers check for Mangal Dosha is to ensure compatibility before marriage. The effect of the dosha depends entirely on which house Mars occupies:

  • 1st House (Lagna): Mars here makes a person aggressive, stubborn, and highly independent. This can cause ego clashes with a partner who expects a submissive spouse.
  • 2nd House: The house of speech and family. Mars here often results in harsh words, financial disputes, and friction within the joint family.
  • 4th House: The house of domestic peace. Mars in this house disrupts the calm of the home environment and can cause issues with property or vehicles.
  • 7th House: The house of marriage. This is the most potent placement. It brings direct conflict, dominance issues, and a high drive that the partner may struggle to match.
  • 8th House: The house of longevity and hidden things. Mars here can point to sudden life changes, accidents, or issues with inheritance and in-laws.
  • 12th House: The house of expenses and isolation. Mars placed here leads to hidden enemies, high financial spending, and a lack of physical intimacy.

Cancellations and Exceptions

Being a Manglik is common—nearly 40% of the population has this placement. However, many people have a "cancelled" or weak Mangal Dosha due to the presence of other planets. For example, if Mars sits in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or is exalted in Capricorn, the negative effects drop significantly. Similarly, if Jupiter aspects Mars, the wisdom of Jupiter controls the aggression of Mars.

This is why a simple "yes" or "no" from a calculator is just the starting point. An astrologer must review the exact degree and the influence of other planets to see if the Dosha actually causes harm.

Traditional Remedies (Upayas) for Mangliks

The most effective remedy for Mangal Dosha is marrying another Manglik. When two people with high Mars energy marry, the fiery temperaments cancel each other out, creating a balanced and highly energetic partnership.

Other traditional remedies include the Kumbh Vivah (a symbolic marriage to a clay pot or a tree before the actual wedding), regular fasting on Tuesdays, and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. Wearing a Red Coral (Moonga) gemstone is sometimes suggested, but it should only be worn after a thorough chart analysis—wearing it incorrectly can actually increase the negative aggression of Mars.
