What is Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya?

Rahu Kaal is a roughly 90-minute window each day that is considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology. During this period, the shadow planet Rahu is said to be dominant, and starting new work, signing contracts, or beginning a journey is avoided. The timing shifts every day because it depends on the local sunrise and sunset — not on a fixed clock time.

Choghadiya is a parallel system that splits each day into eight time slots. Each slot gets one of seven labels — Amrit, Shubh, and Labh are good; Chal is okay; Udveg, Rog, and Kaal are bad. The Astrooz calculator finds your exact sunrise using our proprietary astronomical engine astronomical data for your specific city, then divides the daylight hours into precise slots. This matters because a 2-minute shift in sunrise can push an entire slot boundary forward.

How the calculator works

1. Your location

You select your city. The calculator uses the latitude and longitude to find the exact sunrise and sunset for today at your location. This is not a table lookup — it runs a real astronomical calculation for the Sun's position relative to your horizon.

2. Time division

The total daylight (sunrise to sunset) is divided into 8 equal parts. Each part is roughly 90 minutes but varies by season — summer days produce longer slots, winter days produce shorter ones. Rahu Kaal falls on a specific slot number depending on the weekday.

3. Slot labeling

Each of the 8 slots gets a Choghadiya label (Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Chal, Udveg, Rog, or Kaal) based on a fixed sequence that rotates by weekday. The calculator also marks Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal, and Abhijit Muhurat with their exact start and end times.

Understanding the time slots

SlotQualityGood for
AmritBestAny important work — business, travel, ceremonies, investments.
ShubhGoodMarriage, buying property, starting new ventures.
LabhGoodFinancial matters, trade, profit-oriented activities.
ChalNeutralTravel only. Avoid starting new projects or signing deals.
UdvegAvoidGovernment work only. Avoid personal and business decisions.
RogAvoidMedical treatment only. Everything else should wait.
KaalAvoidNothing. This is the worst slot — avoid all new beginnings.

Rahu Kaal by weekday

Rahu Kaal falls on a different slot each day. The order follows a fixed rule: Monday is the 2nd slot, Saturday is the 3rd, Friday is the 4th, Wednesday is the 5th, Thursday is the 6th, Tuesday is the 7th, and Sunday is the 8th. This sequence never changes — only the actual clock times shift because sunrise moves through the year.

Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal follow similar logic but use different slot numbers. Together, these three periods account for the inauspicious windows of the day. Anything outside these windows and within a favorable Choghadiya slot is considered safe for new work.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal is a daily 90-minute window ruled by Rahu, considered inauspicious for starting new work. It is calculated by dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into eight equal parts, with a specific part assigned to Rahu depending on the day of the week.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides each day into eight time slots of roughly 90 minutes each. Each slot carries a name like Amrit, Shubh, Labh (favorable), Chal (neutral), or Udveg, Rog, Kaal (inauspicious). People use it to pick the best time for travel, business, or ceremonies.

Is Rahu Kaal the same time everywhere?

No. Rahu Kaal depends on local sunrise and sunset, which vary by city. In Mumbai, sunrise is later than in Kolkata, so Rahu Kaal starts and ends at different clock times in each city even on the same day.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

Abhijit Muhurat is a 48-minute window around solar noon considered so auspicious that it overrides all other inauspicious periods including Rahu Kaal. It falls roughly between 11:45 AM and 12:33 PM depending on your location.

Can I start new work during Rahu Kaal if Choghadiya is favorable?

Traditional practice says no. Rahu Kaal takes priority over Choghadiya. Even if the Choghadiya slot is Amrit or Shubh, most astrologers advise against starting anything new during Rahu Kaal. The only exception is Abhijit Muhurat, which overrides Rahu Kaal.
