What is Kundli Matching (Guna Milan)?

Kundli matching, or Guna Milan, is the ancient ancient practice of comparing two birth charts to determine marital compatibility. Before a marriage takes place, an astrologer analyzes the charts of the prospective bride and groom to foresee potential harmony, conflicts, and the overall longevity of the relationship.

The most popular system used for this is Ashtakoot Milan, which translates to "eight-fold compatibility test." It evaluates the position of the Moon in both charts across eight different categories (Kootas). Each category carries a specific point value, adding up to a total of 36 points (Gunas).

The 36 Points of Ashtakoot Milan

To have a successful marriage according to astrological standards, a couple needs a minimum score of 18 out of 36 points. A score below 18 is considered highly incompatible, while a score above 25 is excellent. The 36 points are divided across these eight factors:

  • Varna (1 point): Compares ego and spiritual compatibility. It ensures one partner does not constantly try to dominate the other.
  • Vashya (2 points): Measures mutual attraction and the ability of the partners to influence each other positively.
  • Tara (3 points): Calculates the health and longevity of the relationship. It looks at the birth stars (Nakshatras) of the couple.
  • Yoni (4 points): Evaluates sexual compatibility and physical intimacy. It ensures long-term mutual physical satisfaction.
  • Graha Maitri (5 points): Tests intellectual compatibility and friendship. It compares the ruling planets of both Moon signs to see if the couple will be friends, not just spouses.
  • Gana (6 points): Analyzes temperament and behavior. It categorizes people into Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demonic) natures to prevent extreme personality clashes.
  • Bhakoot (7 points): Assesses emotional connection, family welfare, and financial growth post-marriage. A mismatch here causes Bhakoot Dosha, leading to financial strain or emotional distance.
  • Nadi (8 points): The most heavily weighted factor. It measures genetic compatibility and health. A mismatch causes Nadi Dosha, which traditionally warns of issues with childbirth or severe health problems for the couple.

Beyond the 36 Points: Mangal Dosha

Achieving a high score in the 36-point system is not enough on its own. An astrologer must also check for Mangal Dosha (the position of Mars). If one partner is a Manglik (Mars in specific houses causing aggression and conflict) and the other is not, it can lead to severe friction in the marriage, regardless of a high Guna score.

Our free Kundli Matching calculator automatically checks both the 36-point Ashtakoot score and the presence of Mangal Dosha for both partners, giving you a complete picture of your marital compatibility.
