What is a Jaimini Karaka Calculator?

In Vedic astrology, there are two major systems: Parashari and Jaimini. While Parashari astrology assigns fixed planetary roles (Jupiter always means children, Venus always means marriage), Jaimini does something different. It assigns roles based on the actual degree each planet has reached in your birth chart. These degree-based roles are called Chara Karakas, and they change from person to person. A Jaimini Karaka calculator sorts your seven planets by degree and tells you which planet controls which area of your life.

The Astrooz calculator uses high-precision astronomical data to find the exact degree, minute, and second of each planet at your birth. Most online tools round off to whole degrees, which can swap two Karakas if the planets are close together. We calculate to arc-second precision, so the sorting order is accurate even when two planets sit within the same degree.

How the Jaimini Karaka Calculator Works

1. Your birth data

You enter your date, time, and city of birth. The calculator needs your exact birth time because planetary degrees change roughly one degree every two hours for the Moon, and even faster planets shift enough in minutes to flip the Karaka order.

2. Degree extraction

The calculator finds the exact longitude of all seven planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) and strips each down to its degree within its zodiac sign. A planet at 15°42' Aries and another at 28°03' Leo are compared only by their sign degrees: 15.7° vs 28.05°.

3. Karaka assignment

The seven planets are sorted from highest degree to lowest. The planet with the highest degree becomes your Atmakaraka (soul planet). The next becomes Amatyakaraka (career planet). This continues down to the Darakaraka (spouse planet), which has the lowest degree.

Why Chara Karakas matter more than you think

Standard Parashari astrology treats Jupiter as the karaka for children in every single chart. But Jaimini says: what if Saturn is your Putrakaraka? That means your relationship with your children will carry Saturn's weight — discipline, distance, late arrival, but deep long-term bonds. The Chara system is personal. Two people born on the same day but ten minutes apart can have completely different Karaka assignments.

The Atmakaraka is the most studied among the seven. Its sign placement in the Navamsa chart (called the Karakamsha) determines your Ishta Devata, your ideal spiritual path, and the kind of work that truly satisfies your soul. If your Atmakaraka is the Sun, your soul craves authority and recognition. If it is Saturn, your soul is here to serve and endure. Knowing this one planet tells you more about your inner life than an entire Parashari chart reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Atmakaraka in Jaimini astrology?

The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in your birth chart. In Jaimini astrology, it represents your soul's deepest desire and the central theme of your life. Every person has a different Atmakaraka depending on their exact birth time.

How are Chara Karakas calculated?

Chara Karakas are calculated by sorting the seven visible planets (Sun through Saturn, excluding Rahu and Ketu) by their degree within their respective zodiac signs. The planet with the highest degree becomes the Atmakaraka, the next becomes Amatyakaraka, and so on down to the Darakaraka.

What is the difference between Chara Karaka and Sthira Karaka?

Chara Karakas change from chart to chart because they depend on planetary degrees at birth. Sthira Karakas are fixed — for example, Jupiter is always the Sthira Karaka for children regardless of the chart. Jaimini uses Chara Karakas because they give more personalized results.

Can two people have the same Atmakaraka planet?

Yes, two people can share the same Atmakaraka planet. But their remaining six Karakas will almost certainly differ. Even a few minutes of birth time difference changes the planetary degrees enough to rearrange the entire Karaka order.

Why does Jaimini exclude Rahu and Ketu from Chara Karakas?

The standard 7-planet Jaimini scheme excludes Rahu and Ketu because they are shadow planets without physical bodies. Some scholars use an 8-planet scheme that includes Rahu, but the traditional method taught by Sage Jaimini uses only the seven visible planets from Sun to Saturn.
